Flight Instructor Rating (FI)

The FI (flight instructor) rating allows you to share your skills and teach others to fly. It has proven a popular route for future airline pilots who wish to build hours whilst earning money from flying and can sometimes be your first ever job in aviation! Certainly the instructor rating gives you a whole new view point on your own flying and increases your skill, awareness and team skills preparing you well for a future in aviation.

What are the experience and training requirements?

In order to gain your FI rating and to be able to earn money from instructing you will need to hold a commercial pilot's licence and then undergo a course which involves 30 hours flying and 85 hours groundschool training. The actual groundschool requirement is 125 hours but 40 of these can be self study which will be directed by your instructor. Back to the old days of homework again!

On completion of your training you would then need to take and pass a flight test with a CAA examiner.

What is the validity of my rating?

The FI rating is valid for 36 months and is renewed by means of a flight test with a CAA approved examiner. You will also need to have completed at least 12 hours as an instructor in the preceeding 12 months. If you wish, you can attend a seminar organised by the CAA instead of one of the other two requirements detailed above. This is aimed at people who wish to retain their rating but have not been in current practice, or those who wish to renew without the need for a test provided they have maintained the correct level of experience during the remainder of their current rating. The seminar can be substituted for one of the other two requirements at every alternate renewal.
