Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI)

Once you gain your FI rating there are various restrictions imposed upon you as an instructor. If you would like to advance your new found talents and teach people to a higher level of complexity you can complete a small upgrade course to have certain restrictions removed. The IRI upgrade is one such course. This gives you the ability to teach applied instrument flying so you can train students to IMC rating or IR level.

What are the experience and training requirements?

Pre entry requirements are for the applicant to hold a valid UK CPL or ATPL. (A valid IR is also required if you wish to teach instrument ratings) You must have also completed at least 200 hours flight time under IFR of which up to 50 can be in an approved simulator, or have completed at least 50 hours by sole reference to instruments. (This requirement is reduced to 10 hours if the applicant only wishes to instruct for the IMC rating) The applicant must also hold a current un-restricted FI rating.

The course consists of 5 hours of flying and 10 hours of groundschool training. Following the training there will be a test with a CAA approved examiner.
